It's one of those things you don't think about 'til you're standing in the shop, holding one up, thinking, "Will this look utterly tragic on my windowsill?" I've been there more times than I care to admit.

Right, so you asked about Hobby Lobby. Funny you mention it—I was just in one last Tuesday, the one off the ring road near Manchester, rain lashing the windows. Needed something for a bunch of peonies I’d impulse-bought. The vase aisle… it's a proper assault on the senses, isn't it? All that glitter and colour.

Shapes? Oh, it's a proper mix. You've got your classic cylinder shapes, standing there all tall and serious like a guardsman. Dead popular, those. Easy to match, I suppose. But then, tucked on the lower shelves, you find these chunky, rustic jug-style vases. You know the ones? They look like they've been nicked from a farmhouse table. I bought a similar one from a boot fair in Cornwall last summer—cracked glaze and all—and it's my absolute favourite for wildflowers. Makes everything look intentionally casual, even when it's not.

But the real showstoppers are the *textured* ones. I'm talking about vases with this sort of… woven ceramic look, or ones with deep, irregular grooves. They catch the light differently, make shadows dance. They feel brilliant to hold, too—not just smooth and boring. I ran my fingers over one that had a finish like petrified tree bark. Gorgeous. Sold out, of course.

Finishes! Now that's where Hobby Lobby goes a bit mad, in the best way. The matte finishes are everywhere. Soft, chalky blues and dusty pinks. They've got this quiet, calming vibe. But then, right next to 'em, you've got these vases with a metallic drip glaze. Gold or copper dripping down the side, like it's been caught in a glamorous rainstorm. A bit much for my taste, but my friend Sarah swears by them for her dining table. Says it looks "expensive." (It doesn't, not really, but it does look fun!).

And the glitter. Good grief, the glitter. They love a bit of glitter fused into the glaze, especially on those smaller bud vases. It's not subtle, mind you. It's full-on festive, all year round. I can see the appeal—adds a bit of sparkle to a gloomy corner. I nearly got a cerulean blue one with silver sparkle last Christmas. Put it back. Regret it sometimes when the sun hits the shelf just so.

Here's a tip I learned the hard way, though: some of those fancy finishes, the really high-gloss or crackle-glaze ones, they can be right nightmares to clean. Water leaves spots, and if you leave stems in too long… well, let's just say I've had to retire a beautiful moss-green vase because the inside looked like a science experiment. Now I stick to simpler glazes or glass liners.

You see, choosing a vase isn't just about what's "popular." It's about the weight of it in your hand. The sound it makes when you drop a single stem in. The way it holds the morning light in your kitchen. The Hobby Lobby lot have cottoned on to that—they offer a bit of everything, from the safe and simple to the gloriously over-the-top. It's a treasure hunt. You might go in for a plain white pot and come out with a hand-painted terracotta urn that you have absolutely no plan for. Not that I've ever done that. *Cough*.

So, yeah. Next time you're passing one, pop in. Have a rummage. Ignore the "popular" and grab the one that makes you smile, or better yet, the one that feels like it's already got a story to tell. Even if that story just starts with, "I bought this on a rainy Tuesday because I fancied some peonies." That's the best bit, innit?

Blimey, where to even start with vases, eh?
