Last spring, I was helping my mate Sarah sort out her wedding tables at that barn venue in the Cotswolds. Total nightmare at first, I tell you. We had these gorgeous, tall delphiniums—must’ve been nearly three feet—and she’d gone and bought these wide, shallow bowls. Looked like the flowers were doing the limbo! They just flopped over the sides, poor things. We ended up racing to a charity shop in Moreton-in-Marsh and found this brilliant, sturdy cylindrical vase for a fiver. Saved the day!

Right, so floral heights and vessel styles… it’s less about rules and more about a bit of a dance, innit? Think of the vase as the stage and the flowers as the performers. You wouldn’t put a ballet dancer in a phone box, would you?

For those tall, dramatic stems—think lilies, gladioli, or those architectural snapdragons—you need something that gives ’em backbone. A tall, cylindrical vase or one with a trumpet top is your best bet. Holds them upright and proud. I’ve got a smoky grey glass one from a studio in Margate that makes a single stem of monstera leaf look like a sculpture. Pure magic.

But then, my absolute favourite thing is a low, sprawling centrepiece. For a proper dinner party vibe where people can actually see each other across the table! You want a vessel that’s wide and open. A fluted bowl, a vintage compote dish, even a rustic dough bowl. Last Christmas, I filled a shallow ceramic platter with cuttings of pine, eucalyptus, and those little spray roses. Smelled like a forest and didn’t block a single wink of flirtation across the table.

Oh, and the material! That’s where the personality sneaks in. A matte ceramic vase feels modern and grounded. A clear glass one is all about the stems—you see the messy, beautiful jungle of stems inside, which I adore. But I made a mistake once with a porous terracotta pot—drank all the water overnight and my peonies wilted by pudding! Learnt that lesson the hard way.

It’s really about what you’re trying to *do*, see? A massive urn overflowing with greenery says “celebration.” A single ranunculus in a tiny bud vase says “I noticed this today and it made me smile.” Both are perfect.

Honestly, the best advice I ever got was from a florist on Columbia Road. She said, “Love, just play. Put the flower in the jug. If it looks right to you, it *is* right.” So, my two cents? Forget defining anything. Just start with a flower you love, and rummage through your cupboard ’til you find its partner in crime. The right pair just… sings.

Blimey, that takes me back!
